The growing sport of “pickleball” has been introduced to Lakewood as part of the city’s Active Plus fitness activities for older adults. Pickleball mixes the concepts of badminton, ping pong and tennis. It’s played on a relatively small court, so lots of people around the country are finding that it provides fun and physical activity but without the wear-and-tear of other sports. Click for short video about pickleball from CityTV.
Pickleball courts go into action every Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. on the basketball courts at Mayfair Park.
There’s no cost or obligation to try, and no need to call ahead. All equipment, including paddles and balls, can be borrowed from staff at the Burns Community Center (on the southern edge of the park), and Lakewood recreation staff will be available at the courts to show new participants the rules and how to play.
