Mae Boyar Park is an Award Winner

Mae Boyar Park in Lakewood The Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) honored Lakewood's Mae Boyar Park activity building as one of the top recreation projects in Southern California and Lakewood’s Public Works Director Lisa Rapp as the top public works leader in the public sector in Southern California for 2010 following the facility's opening. The association's awards ceremony was held at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza and attended by 250 people, including city and public works officials.

The Mae Boyar Park Building was recognized for its early 1900’s Craftsman style, environmentally sustainable design and materials, connection to the West San Gabriel River trail system and its on-time and under-budget project management.

Lisa Rapp was honored for her 30 successful years in the public works profession, including 14 years as Lakewood’s Director of Public Works. Her work includes overseeing the renovation of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station and an award-winning repaving program for Lakewood’s residential streets.

"Lakewood staff has once again brought pride to our city with these awards," said then Lakewood Mayor Joseph Esquivel. “The new Mae Boyar Park Building will be a beautiful resource to Lakewood residents for decades to come. Lisa Rapp has also been a valuable resource for the people of Lakewood for many years, as I know she will continue to be in the future. She manages our public works efforts extremely well, and also enhances the public works profession to the benefit of all of Southern California.”

Twenty-seven projects and professionals received APWA “BEST awards.” BEST stands for Building Excellence/Shaping Tomorrow. Lakewood was the only city in southeast Los Angeles County receiving the award in 2010. Other award-winning agencies included the Port of Los Angeles for its 22nd Street Park in San Pedro and the City of Buena Park for its new police headquarters.

There are 1,200 members of the APWA Southern California Chapter from government agencies and private sector engineering and design consultants, contractors and vendors in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
