Utility worker scams

Utility workers or city crews

Be wary of unexpected visits by people claiming to be utility workers or city crews who need access to your property.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Legitimate visits by utility workers or city crews are typically scheduled well ahead of time with homeowner involvement.
  • All City of Lakewood employees and utility workers wear uniforms and carry identification badges.
  • If someone arrives unexpectedly, ask them to wait outside. Take a moment to call their employer using a phone number you look up to verify their authenticity.
  • Do not give out your Social Security number or other personal information to someone coming to your door.
  • If you are asked to pay for utility service, call the utility company first. Utility companies do not collect money in the field.
  • Be suspicious of someone claiming to be at your home to shut anything off. Typically, numerous notices are sent before a utility will be shut off.

Call the Lakewood Sheriff's Station at 562-635-3500 if you feel a visit is suspicious. Criminals sometimes use the appearance of door-to-door visits as a cover for casing a neighborhood.
