College Fair returns Oct. 10

Lakewood's annual College Fair is Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Centre, 5000 Clark Ave.

No pre-registration needed, and all are welcome!

Parents and students (ages 15-22) can meet college representatives, pick up brochures and get the information needed for the admissions process.

All students in attendance on Oct. 10 are eligible to win a $250 scholarship.

Free parent/teen college information sessions

As part of College Fair week, three sessions will be held at the Lakewood Youth Center on Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 20. 

Parents and teens can sign up for any one--or all three--of the free presentations to help with the college admissions process:

College Information & Admissions Workshop: Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

The workshop is designed for parents and students and is led by John H. Wilson III of West Angeles Education & Enrichment Program (EEP), a leading nonprofit independent authority on affordable college options for families.

Topics include:

  • The College Admissions Process: Where should students apply and what will it cost?
  • CSU, Common App and UC Application Process.
  • All about the FAFSA: How to get started, when to file, and who files it?
  • What you and your teen should be doing (by grade level) to get ready to apply for college.
  • What does loan forgiveness rejection mean for your student's college future?
  • What does the affirmative action ruling of the Supreme Court mean?
  • Question and Answer Segment.

How to Pay for College Without Going Broke: Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

Topics include:

  • How to get ahead by developing a customized plan to meet all the college costs.
  • How to lower your "out-of-pocket" costs and get the maximum amount of money from each school.
  • How to send your child to an expensive private university for less than a state school.
  • Selecting the best academic and social fit for students and best financial fit for families.

  • Learn about different engineering industries.
