Memorial Day photos and video now online
Photos from the May 28 Memorial Day ceremony at Del Valle Park are now available for viewing.
You can also watch the Lakewood CityTV video of the ceremony at www.lakewoodcity.org/MemorialDayVideo.
The ceremony featured remarks by Mayor Todd Rogers and keynote speaker Don Walsh and a musical performance by the Lakewood-based Golden Sands Chorus.
Walsh served in the Navy for four years, with tours of duty during the Vietnam War as a Petty Officer Third Class, where he functioned as a communications technician on assignments throughout South Vietnam. He has been a member of the American Legion in New York and Lakewood for our 40 years, holding various offices, most notably chaplain and 2nd vice commander.
Don researched the 43 young men of Lakewood who died in the Vietnam War and provided some interesting background information. The attendees were noticeably moved when he shared that the widow of one of the service men, Joseph Michael Romero, was at the event with their son, who was only 15 days old when his father passed away.
Members of Lakewood veterans organizations participated in the event, as did the Lakewood High School Naval JROTC, which presented the colors.
The ceremony also featured the annual reading of "The Boys of Del Valle Park," a poem written by the late Vietnam veteran and original Lakewood resident Dennis Lander. It was read this year by Michele “Shelley” Owen-Neher, sister of Steven C. Owen. Steven had served for three years in the Army before being killed in South Vietnam in 1969. His is one of the 43 names of Lakewood men listed on the veterans memorial at Del Valle Park.
