Get rid of bulky household items and e-waste for free
Lakewood’s Bulky Item collection provides residents with an easy and convenient way to get rid of large, unwanted household items, including mattresses, water heaters, sofas and chairs.
To schedule a Bulky Item Pickup, call Lakewood's disposal contractor, EDCO, at 562-531-3054 before 3:30 p.m. at least one day prior to your regular trash collection day.
The service is free, but limited to six pickups per single family residence each year.
Some items cannot be picked up. They include:
- Hazardous waste
- Old auto parts
- Machinery and other industrial discards
- Oil, grease, and other liquids
- Building materials such as bricks, lumber, old roofing materials, dirt, and broken concrete
- Excessively large items, such as whole tree trunks and large limbs
Based on Health Department recommendations, EDCO requires that used mattresses or box springs be sealed in a plastic bag designed for that purpose in order to be picked up. Mattress bags are available at home improvement stores and moving/storage facilities.
If the mattress is not secured in one of these bags, it will not be picked up.
E-waste, such as TVs and computer equipment, should not be placed in your regular trash. E-waste can be disposed of through a Bulky Item Pickup or at EDCO’s transfer station at 2755 California Ave., Signal Hill on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (NOTE: COVID-19 has affected these hours; please check with them for updates.)
Hazardous waste like paint, oil and household chemicals can also be dropped off at EDCO’s transfer station. Go to www.lakewoodcity.org/specialtrash for more information.
The city encourages the donation or reuse of many of the same items that its bulky item pickup program handles. There are numerous local shelters, non-profit organizations, repair shops, thrift stores, consignment stores and second-hand stores that may be willing to take your unwanted household items like furniture, appliances, linens, clothing, decorative items and equipment.
A list of suggested organizations that accept household goods is available at www.lakewoodcity.org/bulkystuff or call 562-866-9771, extension 2140.
