San Martin Park

San Martin Park with new 'pumpkin park' play equipment installed in 2014.
The installation of a new “pumpkin playground” for San Martin Park was completed in November 2014. The Lakewood City Council joined lots of smiling Lakewood kids in the new pumpkin carriage at San Martin Park as part of the community ribbon-cutting for the renovated playground.

Hundreds of kids cheered and swarmed the playground after Mayor Todd Rogers and the council officially opened it by leading a group countdown of “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, PUMPKIN!” (photo below). See photo gallery.

A real-life Cinderella and Prince Charming joined residents for photos and two hours of family-friendly festivities that included pumpkin-themed cookies, face painting and a sand castle contest. A commemorative pumpkin playground pin was also handed out.

The mayor reflected on the neighborhood park for which many residents feel a deep nostalgia.  “Like many people, I was sad that our original pumpkin carriages had aged to the point where safety was becoming an issue. But I’m so pleased that our city was able to craft a new playground that will maintain—and even enhance—the traditional pumpkin and castle theme at San Martin Park.

"The playground now has a large, new pumpkin carriage with two horses and a big castle area. I know that Lakewood’s children will get many wonderful decades of use out of this new playground, just as Lakewood children did for many years from our first pumpkins. The pumpkin tradition at San Martin lives on!”
