Since 1981, the City of Lakewood has honored its youth athletes at the annual Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame banquet in February.

The annual banquet is held the last Monday in February.

The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding athletes, teams, boosters and athletic achievements as well as Athlete of the Year and Performers of the Year for over a dozen sports.

Special Achievement awards

Special Achievement awards are also presented for academics and other significant contributions to youth sports in Lakewood.

Along with several others, these awards include:

  • Scholar Athlete Award
  • Outstanding Sustained Contribution to Youth Sports
  • All Round Performer
  • Outstanding High School Career Achievement

In 2022, the "Joe Esquivel Coach of the Year Award" was added to honor a local high school coach for their outstanding achievement and contributions to the advancement and well-being of athletes and their sport.

The award is named after former Lakewood Council Member and Mayor, Joe Esquivel. One of Joe’s greatest joys as a resident of Lakewood was serving as a volunteer coach at Bolivar Park, with the Lakewood Youth Sports program. Joe Esquivel passed away in 2022 and this award honors his legacy.
