The five members of the city council are elected to serve a four-year term of office.

Each year, the city council reorganizes, selecting one council member to serve as mayor and another as vice mayor.

The mayor is selected by the City Council from among its members and serves a one-year term.

New council districts

As of 2022, Lakewood City Council Members are elected based on districts, each representing a portion of the city, instead of having each council member elected by the entire city as is the current practice in Lakewood.

Council members will be elected in Districts 1, 2 and 5 every four years starting in 2022.

Council members will be elected in Districts 3 and 4 every four years starting in 2024.
