Curbside recycling has kicked off in Lakewood. EDCO Waste and Recycling Services continues to deliver blue recycling carts to single-family homes citywide.
Recycling collection begins on each resident's regular trash day--the week following their cart’s arrival. A new generation of EDCO trash trucks running on clean natural gas empties the blue recycling carts and takes the mixed recyclables to a "materials recovery facility" where the recyclables are separated and sorted. Free immunizations will continue at locations around the county through December.County health officials warn that supplies are currently limited. Bogus property tax related mailings are still being received by area residents. The Los Angeles County Tax Assessor warns the deceptive mailings are coming from companies that use official-sounding names like "Tax Adjusters," "Tax Readjustment," or "Tax Review."

(Originally published 09/01/2009) Nature is quietly working for a greener Lakewood, filtering runoff along Paramount Boulevard of pollutants, capturing litter, and even adding to the beauty of the city’s “urban forest.”

An American Red Cross blood drive is coming to Lakewood Center on Tuesday, November 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. It will be in the Lakewood Sheriff's Community Safety Center inside the mall. The Los Angeles area continues to suffer a severe blood shortage and officials encourage residents to participate in this conveniently located drive.

Converting yards into drought-resistant landscapes is one of the most effective steps homeowners can take to save water. The Water Replenishment District is offering free water-wise "eco-gardener" classes to help residents save water and improve their gardens.
The series introduces concepts of water efficient gardening and landscaping. Students will become familiar with irrigation basics, best horticultural practices, drought tolerant and native plants, and garden design concepts.
