A Shrine for Sports Heroes
at Lakewood McDonald's

A spectacular history of the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame is on display at the McDonald's restaurant at 4848 Woodruff Avenue at Del Amo Boulevard. The Hall of Fame Gallery has been housed at the restaurant since 1982 thanks to the generosity of Ron Piazza, operator of the McDonald’s restaurants in Lakewood and one of the founders of the Hall of Fame.

Displays and interactive DVD presentations tell the story of the city’s sports champions. Local sports memorabilia is displayed along with the portraits of Athletes of the Year and such Lakewood icons as Lisa Fernandez, John Ford, Pete Manarino, Jack Huntsinger, John Herbold, Mike Rae, and Jason Kapono. "I can’t tell you how many moms and dads have brought their sons or daughters in here over the years and pointed up to plaques that had their name on it," Piazza noted during the Hall of Fame rededication. “When I see that, it really makes me feel good.”

Youth Hall of Fame honors student athletes

The 2016 Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year is Montana Dixon. Hailing from Lakewood High School, Montana was the softball team’s leader in many offensive categories for the Lancers. The senior catcher batted .446 with 10 home runs, 41 runs batted in and an unreal slugging percentage of 1.039.

Though she was offered a scholarship to Stanford University when she was just a sophomore, she never let up, working hard in both the classroom and on the field. Her teachers speak highly of her dedication to her studies, earning the Lakewood High Scholar Athlete Award and her 39 career home runs are sixth best all-time in CIF history.

The Athlete of the Year moniker is just one more accolade to add to a long list of awards she received for her 2016 campaign. She was the Moore League Co-MVP, and was named all-CIF, all-state, and a Premiere Girls Fastpitch All-American. Montana’s hard work has clearly paid dividends.
