Lakewood Youth Sports Opening Day
Kris Kringle Golf Tournament Supports Project Shepherd
The fifth annual revival of the Kris Kringle Golf Tournament supporting Project Shepherd will tee off at Lakewood Country Club on Friday, December 4 with an 11:45 a.m. shotgun start.  A tournament banquet immediately follows at 4:30 p.m. – with adjournment by 5:45 p.m! This year's tournament honors Lakewood Center for many years of the Red Bucket Program and overall support of Project Shepherd.

The tournament fee is $100 if received by November 25 or $125 if received later.

The City of Lakewood offers a wide variety of sports opportunities. For current sign up dates, please call the city Recreation and Community Services Department at (562) 866-9771 ext. 2408 during city hall business hours.

LYS participant is now a coach making a difference
News ImageVolunteer coaching is a tradition dating back to the Lakewood of  1957. Volunteers were instrumental in making early Lakewood's parks programs a reality. 

These volunteers are still the backbone of the Lakewood Youth Sports (LYS) program. For youth sports players, participation is a chance to experience fun competition and learn new skills in a supportive, safe environment.

This is the second in a series of profiles of Lakewood volunteers.

Burns Community Center features “Baby Boomer” health club

Lakewood residents (age 50+) have a discounted fitness opportunity available to them with the opening of the new “Nifty after Fifty” fitness center at Lakewood’s Burns Community Center. Nifty after Fifty is a full-service, state-of the art fitness center for individuals age 50+.

 

The unique facility is on the second floor of the Burns Community Center. It offers a variety of programs and services including: fitness and strength training program using state-of-the art equipment; spa services; fitness classes; social programs and physical therapy.

A shrine for sports heroes at Lakewood McDonald's
News ImageAfter a $750,000 renovation, the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame has reopened spectacularly at the McDonald’s restaurant on Woodruff Avenue at Del Amo Boulevard. The Hall of Fame Gallery has been housed at the restaurant for 25 years, thanks to the generosity of Ron Piazza, operator of the McDonald’s restaurants in Lakewood and one of the founders of the Hall of Fame.

Lakewood Youth Sports (LYS)
News ImageLakewood Youth Sports consists of a variety of sports opportunities throughout the year for boys and girls ages 6-17 years. The program emphasizes teamwork and sportsmanship via its 40-plus year tradition. Participants register individually and are placed on teams organized at Lakewood parks. All teams are coached by volunteers.
