Aquatics in Lakewood

Mayfair Pool swimmersThe City of Lakewood operates two public swimming pools and six wading pools throughout the summer season. The season typically begins in late May. 

Each swimming pool typically offers a variety of swim instruction programs and recreational swim opportunities. 

The summer catalog is the best source for water fitness classes and special pool events and comes out around Memorial Day.

Swim Opportunities

Swim Lessons: Mayfair Pool pre-summer swim lessons run from Memorial Day weekend through late June. Online swim lesson priority registration for residents begins in early May. Non-residents may register online two weeks later. Participants may sign up at www.lakewoodcity.org/eCatalog.

Recreation Swim: Pre-summer Recreation Swim takes place at Mayfair Pool and McCormick Pool on Memorial Day weekend only, May 28-30.

Water Aerobics: Both Shallow and Deep Water Aerobic classes follow a similar seasonal schedule. Typically, participants may choose either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday classes. Fees

Lakewood Swim Cards are issued free with proof of Lakewood residency. (Bring your old card to simply renew it.) Cards are available at either pool during summer operating hours. In order to enter onto the pool deck, you must pay the entry fee.

Swimmers must meet the following qualifications to enter the pool:

  • Unaccompanied swimmers are required to be at least 48 inches tall or have a valid Minnow Red Cross (Level 4) swimming card. Youngsters not meeting this requirement must be accompanied in the pool area by an adult (18 years or older) on a one-to-one basis.
  • Approved swimsuits are required. No cut-off pants, leotards, sweats or basketball shorts. No shirts, rash guards only. No water shoes.
  • In order to enter onto the pool deck, you must pay the entry fee.
  • Accompanied adults not attired in swim wear must remain off the pool deck, but are allowed in the bleachers or grass area.
  • Swimmers with long hair must tie their hair in a pony tail.
  • Swim diapers are required for all participants who are not yet toilet trained.

Swim Lessons

Youth, Adaptive & Semi-private Lessons

Lakewood swim classes coincide with the Red Cross Certified Swim Classes. Lessons are typically offered Monday-Friday every half hour between 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday lessons are also available at McCormick Pool only. Not all levels are offered every half hour or on Saturday.

Youth Lessons

Infant/Preschool lessons are for ages 6 months to 5 years old, and Levels 1-6 are for ages 6-15 years old.

Adaptive Lessons

Introduction to water and swimming lessons for those with special needs (ages 3-17), such as hearing or visual impairment, developmental disabilities and special physical needs.

Semi-private Swim Lessons

Maximum three students per class. Limited time slots scheduled.

Adult Lessons

For ages 16 and older. Four, one-hour lessons are typically offered for a two-week session. Sessions are at Mayfair Pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays or at McCormick Pool on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration is available online through our eCatalog and by walk-in at each pool. Refer to pages in our Summer eCatalog for registration procedures and dates, as well as lesson dates and fees.

Water Aerobics

Shallow and deep water aerobics classes are offered. Please refer to our catalog for detailed class information or call 562-866-9771, extension 2408. Registration is available online, by phone, mail or in person at City Hall.

Wading Pools

Wading pools are free and are typically open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for youngsters ages 3-7, from mid June to early September.

Wading Pool Wednesdays

The wading pools at Mae Boyar, Del Valle, Mayfair and San Martin parks are typically open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings from late June to late August.

Wading pools are usually open on the weekends from late May to late September between 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
