Lakewood Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels videoFor over 40 years, Lakewood Meals on Wheels has made it possible for Lakewood residents who can no longer cook for themselves to remain in the comfort of their home and enjoy a nutritious, hot meal and sack dinner.

Volunteers deliver nourishing meals to clients on a regular basis, helping them to remain self-sufficient in their own homes.

Meals on Wheels volunteers are dedicated to helping the disabled, homebound, aged, and chronically or temporarily ill by providing well balanced meals and friendship.

Lakewood Meals on Wheels is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization. The program was started in 1975 by Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach under the guidance of the City of Lakewood. Meals on Wheels started with five clients and now serves more than 180 clients per year. The Lakewood Meals on Wheels Mission Statement is: To provide healthful, high quality home delivered meals to homebound residents allowing them to maintain their independence and dignity.

You can help

  • Help a neighbor in need of services.  Many clients are homebound due to illness, age or disability. The volunteer delivering meals is often the only friendly, caring face they see all day.  “If you know someone in your neighborhood that could benefit from a home delivered meal and a visit from a friendly volunteer, please contact us,” says Meals on Wheels executive director, Debra Larsen. “We’re here to serve any Lakewood resident who needs help.  Our program helps individuals maintain their independence.  We can also help them get connected to other services offered in the city so that they can stay in their home as long as possible.”
  • Volunteer. We can always use an extra pair of hands. Read our FAQ for details.
  • You can help financially, too.  Lakewood Meals on Wheels is sponsored by many private contributors as well as Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach, Project Shepherd, and the City of Lakewood. You can make a tax-deductible donation online at www.lakewoodcity.org/DonateMOW
  • Your business or group can sponsor meals for those who can't afford it by becoming a "Good Neighbor Sponsor." Visit the Good Neighbor Sponsorship page for details.
