But Lakewood's best-kept and best-looking homes of 2010 won’t be recognized unless a neighbor (or the homeowner) calls the Community Relations Office at city hall at 562-866-9771, extension 2160 with their nomination by Wednesday, June 30.
Nominations for 2010 begin in March of 2010 and close on June 30. Photography will take place in July, and award-winning homeowners will be honored in the fall.

Homes honored by Lakewood Beautiful show a real commitment to neighborhood beautification, with attention to detail and that special “something extra.”
In evaluating nominated homes, photos are taken of the street-facing portion of each house and garden. Professional landscape and design architects review the photos and determine if the nominated home will be recognized. Awards are given in two categories, Distinguished Recognition and Honorable Mention.
Beauty and pride
For more than 26 years, Lakewood Beautiful has honored homeowners who have an extraordinary commitment to neighborhood beautification, continuing a community tradition begun by the late Jacqueline Rynerson in 1981 when Lakewood Beautiful began recognizing Lakewood homeowner pride.
Lakewood Beautiful sponsors for 2009 included the Boeing Company, City Light & Power, Inc., CR&R, Inc., EDCO Waste Services, Gateway Business Bank, Lakewood Center, Lakewood Lions Club, Lakewood Pan American Association, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Piazza Family Restaurants, R. F. Dickson Company, Southern California Edison, West Coast Arborists, and Willdan.

Former Mayor Jackie Rynerson created the Lakewood Beautiful program in 1981. Thousands of Lakewood residents, she knew, spent time keeping their yards and homes looking their best, without any reward except the personal satisfaction of a job well done.
She also knew that neighborhood decline begins with homeowner indifference and a community's willingness to let property maintenance standards fall. The Lakewood Beautiful Home Awards Program continues to respond to both of Rynerson's concerns: educating homeowners in the value of property upkeep and honoring the many homeowners who show their pride in keeping homes that beautify their neighborhood.
