Lakewood’s green goals reflect the community’s need for greenhouse gas reduction, sustainable use of natural resources, and preservation of the environment.

Going green starts with simple things: water conservation, recycling and waste reduction, wise energy use, and caring for the quality of life in your neighborhood.

Reduce, reuse, recycle (learn more here) – The “three Rs” of a sustainable city have guided Lakewood for more than two decades.

Tire recycling (learn more here) – Old tires have a second life, too. Lakewood has recycled nearly 1,000,000 tires into street pavement since 2000.

Protecting the ocean (learn more here and also here) – Every bit of litter that makes its way into the storm drain system is an assault on ocean waters. Lakewood’s weekly, citywide street sweeping keeps more than 2,000 tons out of the storm drains each year. Here’s how you can help.

Hazards at home (learn more here) – Common household items are classified as hazardous waste with the potential for environmental harm. Lakewood helps you dispose of them safely.

Buy recycled and save (learn more here) – This guide to buying green shows how easy it is.

Composting (learn more here) – Composting is the greenest way to manage your garden.

Grasscycling (learn more here) – The lazy way to make grass clippings into lawn mulch.

Used oil (learn more here) – Lakewood has solutions to one of the biggest threats to the environment.

Dial-A-Dump (learn more here) – Your bulky household discards are recycled, too. But why not get the tax benefit and call one of these donation centers?

Trash collection (learn more here) – You can go green at the curb, too. Here are some quick tips.

Lakewood Connect puts city services at your service 24/7 (learn more here) – Don’t drive to city hall, Call or click for assistance whenever you need it.

Driving doesn’t have to be an environmental disaster. The Department of Transportation has tips here for making the gas go miles farther.

Why drive? (learn more here) – Lakewood’s transit links can get you out of your car today.

Water conservation

Water conservation (learn more here) – Lakewood residents are cutting water use by an average of eight percent. Here’s how you can, too. Lakewood has a comprehensive plan for water supply and resource protection (learn more here and also here).

'No drugs down the drain' site shows how
News ImageIt  was once a common practice to flush unused, unwanted, and expired medications down the toilet. Doctors or pharmacist may have even directed it. Today we know these substances are bad for our environment--just like used oil and paint.

The California Integrated Waste Management Board has a page specifically on this topic.

The "
No Drugs down the Drain" website provides solutions on how to correctly keep medications out of the environment. Beginning to think about them they same way we do household chemicals is a good first step.

Disposing of them properly is the next step. Taking them to the a
Los Angeles County Household Hazordous Waste Roundup is a good solution. Check out the No Drugs down the Drain site for addtional information.
