Converting yards into drought-resistant landscapes is one of the most effective steps homeowners can take to save water. The Water Replenishment District is offering free water-wise “eco-gardener” classes to help residents save water and improve their gardens.

The series introduces concepts of water efficient gardening and landscaping. Students will become familiar with irrigation basics, best horticultural practices, drought tolerant and native plants, and garden design concepts.
Topics include design tips, irrigation scheduling, maintenance and troubleshooting, appropriate plant selection and fertilizers.
The classroom style programs include PowerPoint presentations and some demonstration. Attendees will receive instructive handouts free of charge. The comprehensive materials are specific to each of the four workshops.
Classes are designed to be taken as a series, but can be attended individually. Pre-registration and RSVPs are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. Call 562-275-4234.
All workshops will be held at the Water Replenishment District Offices at 4040 Paramount Boulevard in Lakewood.
Irrigation Basics for Homeowners
Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
This class is designed for homeowners who are interested in learning more about the installation and maintenance of a residential irrigation system. Participants will learn about the components and layout of the irrigation system, common irrigation problems and basic maintenance.
Horticultural Practices
Saturday October 10 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
This class covers the fundamentals of horticulture. It will provide the participants with an understanding of theory and practical information they can use in their gardens to make it more water efficient.
Drought Tolerant Plants
Saturday, November 14 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
This class is designed to teach homeowners the importance of using less water and drought tolerant plant materials in their gardens. Homeowners will become familiar with various tress, shrubs and groundcovers that are readily available and well suited for water efficient gardens.
Garden Design Concepts
Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
This class will show participants the importance of implementing a design program when installing or renovating their garden. The class focuses on design concepts and ideas for creating a water efficient garden, including selection of plants and materials.
