Pets, pet care and animal control

Pets, pet care and animal controlBow Wow and Meow Day events are coming Saturday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday evening, July 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. These are easy one-stop events for pet licensing, vaccinations at a discount, and micro chipping.

Flea control products and information regarding low-cost spaying/neutering, and health care for dogs and cats will be available.

Cash, checks, and credit cards are accepted for vaccination services and products--cash and check only for dog licensing. Dogs must be on leashes and cats in secure carriers. The events will be held at northeast corner lot at
Clark Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard near the Lakewood Civic Center.

The event is a convenient opportunity to receive maximum health care protection for animal companions at affordable prices. Pet owners get savings on required rabies vaccinations, priced at $8.00 each ($6.00 rabies vaccination cost and $2.00 medical waste fee). Dogs that have current licenses may purchase a dog license from License Inspectors at the clinic.

City ordinances permit no more than two dogs and no more than two cats per household. Lakewood also requires dog owners to license their pets within 60 days of moving to the city or getting a dog.

Lakewood has a "leash law" which requires owners to leash their dog when it is off the owner's property, and that dogs on leashes are "securely and continuously held by a competent person."

SEAACA: Lakewood's animal control agency

SeaacaFor more than half of all Lakewood residents, a house is not a home without the family pet. It might be a cat, a dog, or even something much more exotic. Whatever the choice, in many Lakewood homes, a pet offers companionship and joy. Lakewood's pet population includes about 9,000 dogs licensed in the city by the city's pet care provider, the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA).

All dog and cat licenses for the City of Lakewood are issued by SEAACA and are available for purchase at the SEAACA animal care center or by mail. Call 562-803-3301, extension 239 for licensing information. (Southeast Area Animal Control Authority: Downey 9777 Seaaca Street, Downey, CA 90241.)

Since 1992, SEAACA has provided Lakewood with pet care and animal control services under a contract arrangement. The agency offers similar animal control services for 13 other cities. SEAACA provides a seven-day-a-week response team that handles requests from residents for helping injured animals, stray animal pickup, animal cruelty investigations, barking dog complaints and dead animal collection.

The agency also has pet adoptions and an animal wellness clinic that provides low-cost spay and neuter surgeries and vaccinations.

License information, owner tips, and animal ordinances

Pets, pet care and animal control

The best solution to pet problems is responsible pet ownership. Responsible owners only keep the number of dogs and cats that small Lakewood houses can accommodate.

Whether it's how to care for your new puppy or why spaying or neutering your pet is so important, you can learn a lot from SEAACA at
www.seaaca.org. SEAACA's animal wellness clinic provides low-cost vaccinations on a first-come-first-serve basis.

License cost

The dog license period for Lakewood is from July 1 to June 30 of the given year and is renewed every year. A late fee is charged per license for dogs not licensed within 60 days of residing in the city or after July 31 for license renewals.

The license fee for an unaltered dog is $28 a year. Licenses for altered dogs are $14 a year.

A dog license is required for many reasons, including the confirmation of vaccination against rabies (rabies certificate). Rabies is fatal to pets and dangerous to humans and is common in the wild animal population of Southern California.

With a dog license (and the required rabies vaccination), you protect your dog, your family and community. Before a license is issued, dogs older than four months must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate good for the term of the license. (Licenses for cats are available, but are not required.)

Licenses help in finding lost pets

A license helps find your lost pet at Seaaca. If your pet is lost, the chances of a happy recovery are dramatically increased if your pet wears its license tag along with a pet ID tag. Tags should include the owner's name, current address, and home and work phone numbers.

The best method is a combo collar ID tag and a microchip. Shelters are more routinely scanning strays for microchips, which provide information that tracks to each owner.

Microchips are tiny, permanently encoded devices injected under the animal's skin. Having your pet "chipped" is fast and inexpensive. The SEAACA Animal Wellness Clinic microchips pets for $25.

Be sure to update your pets’ license and microchip information when changes in your residence or personal information occur. Pets wearing their license animals are held longer at animal care centers than unlicensed ones, which are placed up for adoption and may be euthanized after five days.

Unfortunately, owners of unlicensed animals return from vacation to find that their animal ran away from a caretaker and were either adopted or euthanized at a local animal care center. If an animal is wearing a license tag, the animal has a better chance of being reunited with its owner.
