Lakewood Meals on Wheels needs volunteers
The Lakewood Meals On Wheels program (MOW) has been making life easier for elderly residents and shut-ins of all ages since 1975. Today, MOW volunteers range in age from teens to seniors and help with everything from making sandwiches and packaging meals to driving and delivering meals to dozens of Lakewood clients.
“Meals On Wheels makes it possible for elderly members of the Lakewood community who can no longer cook for themselves to remain in their neighborhood and in familiar surroundings,” notes Recreation and Community Services Director Lisa Litzinger. “Meals On Wheels has no age restrictions. The chronically and terminally ill and the disabled are welcome as clients. The need may be permanent or temporary.”
Meals On Wheels delivers a hot, noon meal and a sack dinner to each client. The nutritional meals are important, of course, but daily contact with a caring volunteer is just as important.
Meals On Wheels is a non-profit community agency sponsored by the members of Lakewood/Long Beach Soroptimist Club and the city. All contributions to Meals On Wheels are tax deductible.
