California Contractors State License Board
The Contractors State License Board protects consumers by regulating the construction industry through policies that promote the health, safety and general welfare of the public in matters relating to construction.

What the CSLB does

The Contractors State License Board was established in 1929 at the request of the building industry to protect consumers. Today, the Board continues to protect consumers before and after they hire building contractors. A fifteen-member board appoints the CSLB executive officer, or Registrar, and directs administrative policy for the 380 Board staff members who work from a headquarters office in Sacramento and field offices throughout the state. The board includes nine public members, five contractors, and one labor representative.

The CSLB licenses and regulates contractors in 43 license classifications, investigates complaints against contractors, and through SWIFT (Statewide Investigative Fraud Team), works to eliminate the number of unlicensed contractors working in California.

It provides free publications about hiring contractors and the construction process and maintains this informational web site and toll-free automated telephone response system that provide the public with contractor licensing information.

The Contractors State License Board will accomplish this by:

  • Ensuring that construction is performed in a safe, competent and professional manner
  • Licensing contractors and enforcing licensing laws
  • Requiring that any person practicing or offering to practice construction contracting be licensed
  • Enforcing the laws, regulations and standards governing construction contracting in a fair and uniform manner
  • Providing resolution to disputes that arise from construction activities
  • Educating consumers so that they make informed choices
