General information for new (and old) residents
Whether you're a newcomer or a Lakewood oldtimer, there's a lot to know when it comes to having and living a full and active life in this ever- changing community. What follows is a general discussion of the Lakewood community.

Where does Lakewood shop?

Lakewood has dozens of shopping destinations. Lakewood Center is one of the largest regional malls in Southern California. Lakewood Marketplace, Pioneer Square, and Lakewood Square offer specialty shops and super markets. The new Wal-Mart center brings the world’s largest retailer to Lakewood. Lakewood’s Cherry Avenue “auto row” is home to three new car dealers. The Candlewood Avenue “restaurant row,” Candlewood shops, and expanded Pacific Theatres complex make Lakewood Center an exciting nighttime destination.

What city park programs are available?

Lakewood has ten major parks for family activities, organized sports leagues, community gatherings, and recreation classes. All Lakewood parks have picnic areas and plenty of beautiful landscaping. Mayfair Park and Bolivar Park each have public pools, with seasonal swimming instruction, water aerobics, diving, and lifesaving classes.

Rynerson Park, at Studebaker Road and Del Amo Boulevard, is north of the Lakewood Equestrian Center. The Equestrian Center has horse boarding and bridle paths.

The seasonal Recreation Catalog highlights Lakewood’s entire recreation program. Copies are available at parks and from the recreation office, or by calling 562-866-9771.

Can I rent a park facility?

Many Lakewood facilities are available for private use. For meetings and conferences, consider The Centre at Sycamore Plaza (562-804-4434). It offers complete banquet facilities and room accommodations for groups of ten to 1,000. The Centre also offers complete wedding receptions, elegant banquets, and party facilities. For more information on park facilities, click here.

For smaller gatherings, both the Todd Center at Mayfair Park and the Palms Park Community Center offer smaller meeting rooms with separate, breakout room flexibility. Both facilities have access to service kitchens.

Monte Verde Park offers a unique, outdoor setting for family reunions and large gatherings. The lodge at Monte Verde Park also has a comfortable “great hall” for in-door activities.

The Lakewood Youth Center has two meeting rooms, kitchen facilities, and a large, secure patio area.

Lakewood also has two pools that are available for rental doing the summer swim season. The Mayfair and McCormick pools offer party packages that include organized activities, staffing and lifeguards, and refreshments.

For information on park and community center rental, call 562-866-9771, extension 2497.
