Roadside radar displays encourage slowing down
Four automatic radar-equipped signs show motorists how fast they’re traveling on some of Lakewood’s busiest streets. The pole-mounted signs give drivers nearly instantaneous feedback--including a flashing strobe if they exceed legal speeds by 15 miles per hour. Data gathered by the units will help the city deploy sheriff’s traffic units.

One unit monitors northbound traffic on Clark Avenue between South and Hedda Streets. Another tracks southbound vehicles between South and Michelson Streets. The units began operating in February of 2008 and will remain in service at these locations for the indefinite future.

Two additional displays are in use in eastern Lakewood with one located on Norwalk Boulevard in advance of the school crosswalk at 207th Street. Another is on Pioneer Boulevard in advance of the school crosswalk at 205th Street.

Positioning displays prior to school crosswalks, in 25 mile per hour school zones, is designed to provide additional safety reminders on streets that otherwise have a 40 mile per hour speed limit. Additional locations may be considered by the Community Safety Commission.
