Volunteering is a key Lakewood value, many opportunities available

For years, Lakewood residents have heeded the call to help others. They show their concern for the community and neighbors by volunteering. Lakewood has been the recipient of awards for community involvement in volunteer activities and there are a variety of opportunities to help and give back to the community. The city’s main volunteering Web page outlines a broad range of chances for one-time volunteer events and ongoing volunteer positions. If you would like to lend a helping hand, a number of volunteer programs that aid Lakewood residents listed below.

 

The variety of volunteer positions can be matched to personal interests and numerous teen volunteer opportunities assist youths in gaining job experience or fulfilling community service hours needed for school requirements

CARE Program--Community Awareness in Response to Emergencies (562-866-9771, extension 2404) Disaster Preparedness for yourself, family, and neighborhood.

 

Lakewood Volunteer Day (562-925-7512) Volunteers assist with yard and outside maintenance at homes of modest income and disabled residents.

 

Lakewood Youth Sports (562-866-9771, extension 2408) Volunteers coach youth in baseball, softball, flag football, volleytennis, and basketball programs. Click for more on volunteer coaches for Lakewood Youth Sports 

 

Meals on Wheels (562-925-8747) Volunteers work approximately two hours a week making sandwiches and packing food, driving to participant’s home, or accompanying the driver to deliver to door.

 

Neighborhood Watch (562-866-9771, extension 2112) Volunteers link their neighborhoods to safety services and serve as a liaison with the city and the Sheriff’s Department.

 

Project Shepherd (562-925-7512) Project Shepherd is an assistance program for Lakewood residents.

 

Special Olympics (562-429-7472) Volunteers help with coaching and general supervision of the athletes.

 

Tutoring Programs (562-866-9771, extension 2408) Volunteer tutors help both children and teens with homework.
