San Gabriel River open space parks
get a $300,000 boost for expansion

The San Gabriel River will soon be completely bounded by Lakewood parks, walking paths, bike trails and the rustic 3,000 square foot S. Mark Taper Foundation Vista Lodge at Monte Verde Park.

See related 02/2007 eMagazine on trails/parks expansion

At their July 26 meeting, the Lakewood City Council allocated $300,000 in grant funding from the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy to develop 2.3 barren acres along the west bank of the San Gabriel River to complete another “passive open space” link in the existing River Parkway Nature Trail. The landscaping project will extend the nature trail along the river from Carson Street to a new Del Amo Boulevard trail head. See map above.

Phase I was dedicated in May 2003, opening the 17-acre West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail. (Right) It was funded with $1.3 million dollars in voter-approved park bonds. The council action gets Phase II underway and continues the largely grant and bond funded effort to reclaim vacant"waste land" boarding the San Gabriel River and adjacent power line right-of-ways.

In 2003, the city received an “Achievement” award from the California Park & Recreation Society for Facility Design and Park Planning. The award honored the new West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail. This project was also named an American Public Works Association Project of the Year.

What was once a dusty right-of-way under the power lines along the west bank of the San Gabriel River (left) is now a beautiful open space, landscaped with trees and shrubs, greened with hardy perennials, and bordered by a walking and jogging path (below.)

Located adjacent to Lakewood's Monte Verde Park and along the San Gabriel River, the nature trail is an inviting, half-mile long, meandering path through a carefully selected range of California native plant material.

The parkway nature trail features:

  • Half-mile accessible nature trail
  • Native California plants and trees
  • Access to the San Gabriel bike trail
  • Nature education opportunities
  • Natural habitat for wildlife

Phase II's completion is schedule no later than December 2006.

Open space gems

The west side of the river also includes Monte Verde Park - The natural beauty of Monte Verde Park and the outstanding facilities of the S. Mark Taper Vista Lodge just might be considered a “jewel” of Lakewood park facilities.

A quarter-mile long nature trail now loops around the perimeter of the park, creating a voyage through several ecosystems representing elements of the native California landscape: an oak grove, a dry creek and a fern dell. The site also offers a landscaped amphitheater and fire ring.

The S. Mark Taper Foundation Vista Lodge is a reinterpretation of a classic mountain lodge with exposed beams, a "great room" with a fireplace and a wall of windows that provides a panoramic view of the park and covered patio.

Rynerson Park: 40-acres of open space, bike trail head, walking trails and baseball

Just across the river is Rynerson Park is located on Studebaker Rd. just south of Del Amo Blvd. This 40-acre park is adjacent to the San Gabriel River with easy access to the bike trail along the riverbed. The park was dedicated in 1990 and provides a nice retreat from urban Southern California. Formerly named River Park, Rynerson Park was named after Jacqueline Rynerson, former mayor of Lakewood and a leader in the acquisition and development of the park. Its diverse mix of open space, a fitness circuit (Right) and cooperative Little League use illustrate the city commitments which made Lakewood a Sportstown USA city. Just south of the park is the Lakewood Equestrian Center (entered from Carson Street.)

Rynerson Parks special features:

  • Little League Fields
  • Wildflower Meadow
  • Picnic Shelters with Barbecue
  • Fitness Circuit
  • School Age Playgrounds
  • Tot Lot Playground
  • 1.5 Mile Fitness Trail
  • Rustic Outdoor Amphitheater

Rynerson Park is a terrific trail head for cycling with parking for bike rides to the ocean covering what cycling groups believe issome of the most scenic on the river.
