I am unable to get around and need a ride

Senior Transit

The city's DASH transit service is free to Lakewood residents 60 years of age or older without their own transportation, and to disabled residents of any age.  Users of the service must meet some eligibility requirements.

DASH is a reservation-only service that travels in and around Lakewood. For help in becoming a DASH rider, call 562-920-9701.

DASH is supplemented by the Dial-A-Lift special transportation program of Long Beach Transit, through a subsidy provided by the city. Dial-A-Lift provides senior transportation services in Lakewood, Long Beach, and Signal Hill.

DASH Transit offers free, safe, dependable transportation to destinations in and around Lakewood for residents who are age 60 or older and the disabled (including temporarily disabled) of any age who are without their own means of transportation.

How do I sign up?

Riders must be registered with the DASH system. Participants must provide proof of age or, if disabled, a physicians statement.

For registration information, call the DASH office at 562-920-9701 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

Where can I go?

DASH can take riders to any destination within the City of Lakewood including the homes of friends or family members, shopping centers, libraries, medical offices and human services agencies.  DASH also extends a limited distance outside of Lakewood to reach services not found within the city.  These destinations are only for medical, educational or human service programs.

Where do I get picked up?

DASH is curb-to-curb service from your home to your destination and back again.

What are the hours?

DASH is on the road Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.  to 5:00 p.m.   Reservations can made only for these hours.

How do I make a reservation?

The reservation line is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. 4:45 p.m. Reservations may be taken up to seven days before your desired appointment.  There are no same day appointments.  Please call 562-920-9701 to make a reservation with DASH.

Is hospice care available in Lakewood?

Pathways Volunteer Hospice provides support and care for terminally ill patients of all ages, as well as their families, so the dying person can live as fully and comfortably as possible. Services also include bereavement follow-up, support groups, educational workshops, individual counseling, and a resource center.

Is there a senior nutrition program ?

Senior Nutrition Program Low-Cost lunches are available to seniors (age 60 and older) at two locations in Lakewood.  Come to either the Weingart Senior Center or the Burns Community Center for lunch and make new friends in a pleasant social atmosphere.  A small donation is requested and reservations are required.  Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. at both sites Monday through Friday. Weingart also offers lunch on Saturday.

Lakewood Meals-on-Wheels provides nutritious meals for residents who are frail or homebound whether it is a temporary or permanent need.  Meals are delivered by friendly volunteers five days a week, Monday through Friday.  Each delivery consists of a hot dinner to be eaten at noon and a cold supper for the evening meal.  The fee is minimal and the service is available to anyone who needs it, regardless of income.

What recreation programs are there for seniors?

The City of Lakewood's Weingart Senior Center is the hub of senior activities.  It is located at 5220 Oliva Avenue, Lakewood.

The Weingart Senior Center offers recreational activities for adults age 50 or older. Seniors, age 60 or older, can also receive low-cost lunches and more.

The center offers an array of daily classes and programs.  Participants can enjoy exercise classes, health programs, card games, billiards, dancing, lunch, arts and crafts, special events and more.  Many classes are free and a complete schedule of classes can be obtained at the Weingart Senior Center. What services does the City of Lakewood provide?

Lakewood provides a wide range of programs for older residents, including the Senior Nutrition Program of noon meals, the Meals-on-Wheels home nutrition program, and DASH special transit for seniors and the disabled.

Meals for seniors

Lakewood's senior nutrition program provides hot noon meals to residents over age 60 at the William J. Burns Community Service Center and the Weingart Senior Center.

Meals-on-Wheels delivers a hot, noon meal and a sack dinner to each client. The nutritional meals are important, of course, but daily contact with a caring volunteer is almost as important. Meals-on-Wheels volunteers range in age from teens to seniors and help with everything from making sandwiches and packaging meals to driving and delivering meals to clients.

Volunteer Opportunities for Seniors

Lakewood offers volunteer opportunities in many areas of community life, including sports, human services, senior activities, and crime prevention.

Volunteers have served as coaches in park sports for more than forty years.  If you would like to volunteer as a sports coach, call the recreation office at  562-866-9771, extension 2408.
