What services does the City of Lakewood provide?
Lakewood provides a wide range of programs for older residents, including the Senior Nutrition Program of noon meals, the Meals-on-Wheels home nutrition program, and DASH special transit for seniors and the disabled.
The Weingart Senior Center, 5220 Oliva Avenue, schedules daily activities, including special interest classes, health counseling, and social events. For more information about senior programs, call the Weingart Senior Center at 562-630-6141
Meals for seniors
Lakewood's senior nutrition program provides hot noon meals to residents over age 60 at the William J. Burns Community Service Center and the Weingart Senior Center.
For information about the senior nutrition programs, call the William J. Burns Community Service Center at 562-925-9829 or the Weingart Senior Center at 562-630-6210.
Meals-on-Wheels delivers a hot, noon meal and a sack dinner to each client. The nutritional meals are important, of course, but daily contact with a caring volunteer is almost as important. Meals-on-Wheels volunteers range in age from teens to seniors and help with everything from making sandwiches and packaging meals to driving and delivering meals to clients.
For more about volunteering or for more information about the Meals-on-Wheels program, call 562-925-8747.
Transportation
The city's DASH transit service is free to Lakewood residents 60 years of age or older without their own transportation, and to disabled residents of any age. Users of the service must meet some eligibility requirements.
DASH is a reservation-only service that travels in and around Lakewood. For help in becoming a DASH rider, call 562-920-9701.
DASH is supplemented by the Dial-A-Lift special transportation program of Long Beach Transit, through a subsidy provided by the city. Dial-A-Lift provides senior transportation services in Lakewood, Long Beach, and Signal Hill. Call 562-435-0115 for Dial-A-Lift membership information.
