How do I dispose of a Christmas tree?
Lakewood collects Christmas trees and recycles them as ground cover. Collection typically begins December 26 and continues into the second week of January. Check Lakewood Online for specific dates.
- The tree should not be in a bag, have any ornaments, or metal stand attached (wood stands are okay).
- Trees over eight feet tall must be cut in half. Place your tree at the curb on the same day as your trash pick-up (which may be affected by the holiday collection schedule).

I have some larger items to be picked up. How do I get them picked up?
For the convenience of Lakewood residents, the city's trash collection contractor has an additional service for large item pick up. This service is designed to help residents dispose of certain types of bulky or awkward household items, such as old mattresses, water heaters, sofas, and chairs.
The service is limited to six (6) FREE collections per household each year.
Some items cannot be picked up.
They include:
- Old auto parts
- Machinery and other industrial discards
- Oil, grease, and other liquids
- Building Materials such as bricks, lumber, old roofing materials, dirt, and broken concrete
- Excessively large items, such as whole tree trunks and large limbs
For hazardous waste like paint, oil, and household chemicals, go online to http://www.888cleanla.com or call (888)CLEAN-LA for a schedule of County-sponsored HHW/E-Waste roundups.
To arrange for this service, call EDCO/BZ Disposal at 562-531-3054 the day before your regular trash pickup day by 3:30 p.m.
(If trash collection is part of your apartment or condominium rent or lease, there is a nominal cost and some limitations on this service. Call EDCO/BZ Disposal at 562-531-3054 for assistance.)
Lakewood will donate your usable discards
Lakewood's bulky item pick up program is taking on a new dimension, thanks to grant funding from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. The expanded program is the first of its kind in the state.
Users of the service won't see any change for bulky item collection. The program will continue to pick up construction and demolition materials, furniture, electronics, and household appliances and equipment.
The items that are reusable will be diverted to charitable organizations, thrift stores, repair facilities, and shelters to accept the reusable items. That means less trash in the landfill and a steady stream of reusable household items for repair and resale.
To schedule a pick up, contact EDCO/BZ Disposal at 562-531-3054 one day in advance of your regular trash collection day. Be prepared to describe your discards and if they are in working condition or not.
While the donation program can't tell you the reuse destination of your donated items, you will find a current list at www.lakewoodcity.org/r3 or you can call 562-866-9771, extension 2500. before your regular trash pickup day by 3:30 p.m.
(If trash collection is part of your apartment or condominium rent or lease, there is a nominal cost and some limitations on this service. Call EDCOBZ Disposal at 562-531-3054 for assistance.)

How should I put out my carts on trash day?
- Set out your gray trash cart, blue recycling cart and green
waste cans at the curb in front of your home prior to 6:00 a.m. sharp on your scheduled service day.
- Please place all carts and cans in front of the curb in the
street with the cart handles facing your home.
- Arrows embossed on the cart lid should point toward the
street.
- Keep a minimum of two (2) feet distance between the gray
trash cart, blue recycling cart and yard waste cans.
- Keep any container three (3) feet from obstructions such
as parked cars, mail boxes, trees and telephone poles.
- Do not overload your trash cart. Do not over fill the
automated cart so as to prevent the cart lid from properly closing.
- Please be careful not to place carts in areas of traffic,
such as bike lanes, in order to avoid blocking paths of travel.
Green waste must be clean
Please keep contaminants out to help ensure green waste material is able to be recycled. Please do NOT place any of the
following in your green-waste can:
Recycled green waste is often used for cover at landfills and can also be used to produce compost.
Household hazardous waste
