FAQs and video on new curbside recycling program
News Image Curbside recycling has kicked off in Lakewood. EDCO Waste and Recycling Services continues to deliver blue recycling carts to single-family homes citywide.

Recycling collection begins on each resident's regular trash day--the week following their cart’s arrival. A new generation of EDCO trash trucks running on clean natural gas empties the blue recycling carts and takes the mixed recyclables to a "materials recovery facility" where the recyclables are separated and sorted.

Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving holiday service tips
News Image Lakewood city hall with be closed in observance of the Veteran’s Day holiday on Wednesday, November 11. Trash service will not be interrupted. Street sweeping service will not be interrupted and Dash Transit Service will be operating.

In observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, city hall will be closed on Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27.

County vaccination clinics
News Image (Published 10/28/09) The Los Angeles County Department of Health has begun a series of H1N1 vaccination clinics. Free immunizations will continue at locations around the county through December.

County health officials warn that supplies are currently limited. Some county clinics will close earlier than anticipated due to short supplies.For more information, click for the county’s H1N1 page

Assessor warns of property tax scam
News Image Bogus property tax related mailings are still being received by area residents. The Los Angeles County Tax Assessor warns the deceptive mailings are coming from companies that use official-sounding names like "Tax Adjusters," "Tax Readjustment," or "Tax Review." 

The official looking notices offer to help the reader get a reduction in their property taxes. The assessor warns residents NOT to pay for a tax review that the county may already be doing for free.

Project Shepherd registration is underway
News Image Eligible Lakewood residents may register for Project Shepherd assistance until November 15 at either the Burns Community Center or at Palms Park. Call the Burns Center at 562-925-7512 or Palms Park at 562-865-6414 for registration information.

Donations of food and toys, participation in the Project Shepherd Teddy Bear Tree program, and opportunities for volunteers are coordinated at the Burns Community Center. Call 562-925-7512 for more information or to become a Project Shepherd volunteer.

‘Photos with Santa’ and ‘Letters from Santa’ benefits Lakewood libraries
News Image The Friends of the Lakewood Libraries is hosting a pair of holiday fundraisers. Proceeds from both fundraisers will benefit Lakewood’s libraries.

“Letters from Santa” arranges for children to receive a personalized holiday letter from Santa Claus at the North Pole.

Residents are also invited to attend “Photos with Santa” at the
Angelo Iacoboni Library on Sunday, November 22.  Between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. children can have a holiday photograph taken with Santa for a $5 fee.

FUN-Tastic Family Night presents: ‘Why dogs fly!’
News Image The “Skyhoundz” will be flying at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza on Friday, November 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The family oriented program features dog trainer and showman Al Erickson and his flying pups. Tricks, agility and Frisbee/disc demonstrations will be part of this display of high energy canine fun. 

A spaghetti and meatballs meal is included featuring cheese bread, lemonade, and dessert.  It will be served prior to the show.  Doors open at 5:45 p.m. The program runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Video: Lakewood ‘bioretention wells’ filter runoff
News Image (Originally published 09/01/2009) Nature is quietly working for a greener Lakewood, filtering runoff along Paramount Boulevard of pollutants, capturing litter, and even adding to the beauty of the city’s “urban forest.”

In addition, the Paramount Boulevard project overlaid the street with rubberized asphalt (which recycled 25,000 used tires into the new paving) and included six solar-powered bus shelters. Click for CityTV video segment
