Airports

Long Beach Airport is the airport closest to Lakewood. It offers several daily flights on American Airlines, America West, and JetBlue. Long Beach airport's proximity and smaller size make it easier to fly into and shorter driving to/from Lakewood. It's airport code is “LGB”.

Alternative area airports include bustling Los Angeles International (LAX) and Santa Ana/Orange County (SNA). These airports offer hundreds of flights into and out of the area and are only a quick 25 minutes from Lakewood. They are "freeway close" to the city and only a convenient ride if you do not arrive during rush-hour traffic. Please consider this in your travel plans.

Lakewood Civic Center Block Party and Fireworks Extravaganza

The Lakewood Civic Center comes alive for one of Lakewood’s most successful and well-attended community events. The Lakewood Civic Center Block Party and Fireworks Extravaganza is scheduled around the Fourth of July holiday weekend and includes many kids’ activities, numerous food booths spotlighting area restaurants in the Taste of Lakewood area, community group booths, and a Beverage Garden. Live musical entertainment begins in the late afternoon and continues until the closing fireworks extravaganza over the Lakewood Center Mall.

Summer Concerts in the Park Series

Summer is a special time in Lakewood. One of the most popular family events is the Summer Concert music series. Weekly concerts begin in June and feature country western music, rock and roll, hits of the 60’s & 70's, big band and more. Over 1,500 residents enjoy listening to the music under the grove of trees at centrally located Del Valle Park, (corner of Woodruff and Arbor) in Lakewood. Bring your picnic blanket and have dinner with us while you listen to some fantastic entertainment.

Dinner and refreshments will be sold at each concert or bring your own. Concerts are held from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Thursday evenings. Summer Concerts in the Park is solely supported by area businesses and concert patrons. Call (562) 866-9771 ext. 2408 after April for a complete concert schedule.

Pan American Fiesta

The Pan American Festival began in 1945 by two Lakewood Lion’s Club Members who wanted to bridge the space and language boundaries which separated North and South America. The Pan American Festival has evolved over the years to include many different aspects, including the El Comienzo Luncheon signifying “the beginning” of the festival events; a poster contest through the schools; a Flags Exchange Ceremony; a poetry contest and more. Residents are most familiar with the three-day Pan American Fiesta held at Mayfair Park in May.

The Fiesta is a longtime Lakewood tradition and features arts/crafts, displays, food booths, entertainment and amusement rides. Over 100 community organizations sponsor food, crafts and display booths.

The Fiesta is sponsored by the City of Lakewood and the Pan American Association. For more information about the Pan American Fiesta or a craft/food booth application, please call the City of Lakewood Recreation and Community Services Department at (562) 866-9771, ext. 2408.

News Image01/16/2007 -

Lakewood residents are emphatically positive about their city’s capacity to be a good place to raise a family, enjoy recreation programs, shop, and work. More than four-fifths of residents in a recent community survey graded their city B+ for preventing neighborhood blight (81%), keeping city streets in repair (83%), providing effective public safety (87%), preserving the pleasant appearance of Lakewood neighborhoods (88%), and providing recreational opportunities (89%).

Their high level of satisfaction with city programs and services may stem from another significant indicator: Lakewood residents truly believe in their community. Nearly nine out of ten residents grade Lakewood B+ (or better) for preserving the community’s positive qualities (83%), sustaining their sense of community over the years (86%), and providing a good place to raise a family (88%).
