Captain Christy Guyovich, commander of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station has a message for illegal fireworks users: “Don’t use illegal fireworks. Don’t tolerate those who do. Don’t let anyone say that it’s okay to use illegal fireworks just because it’s the 4th of July.”
Tolerance of illegal fireworks by otherwise law abiding residents and the easy availability of illegal fireworks from many sources (including through the Internet) threaten Lakewood’s family-oriented celebration of Independence Day, and Captain Guyovich is fighting back.

The program provides relevant information about safety in the workplace, detecting and preventing fraud, and making businesses less susceptible to crime. Businesses in the program participate in the city’s graffiti removal program have access to the city’s Public Nuisance and Property Abatement Team, the Inkless Fingerprinting Program to combat check fraud, and network with other business owners. The Lakewood Mall Watch program works the same way and offers these same opportunities to the businesses in the Lakewood Center Mall. The City of Lakewood’s Public Nuisance and Property Abatement Team is comprised of a special assignment officer, city code enforcement officers and a city prosecutor. Since 1999, they have worked together to identify and “clean-up” nuisance single or multiple housing units and businesses that are creating a haven for criminal activities or that are unsightly or disturbing the peace and safety of Lakewood neighborhoods.
