Position Description:
The City of Lakewood has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities coordinated by the Volunteers in Action Program. Some of the volunteer opportunities are year round and some are seasonal.

Here’s a sampling of the many opportunities:
CARE Program Community Awareness in Response to Emergencies - 562-866-9771, ext. 2404. Disaster Preparedness for yourself, family and neighborhood. Free classes in first aid, CPR, light search and rescue, sheltering and more.
Tutoring Programs - 562-866-9771, ext. 2408 - Do you like to work with youth? Tutors are needed at neighborhood parks to help both children and teens with homework after school.
Youth Track Meet - 562-429-0545 - This annual event in spring, showcases some of our local young athletes. Volunteers help with set up, judging, timing and scoring in various events.
Youth Cross Country Meet - 562-429-0545 -The City holds a meet in the fall for youth between the ages of 5-15. Qualifiers advance to a regional meet in December. Volunteers help with timing and marshaling the course.
Recreation Therapy - 562-429-7472 - Therapeutic Recreation is designed to provide equal recreation and leisure opportunities for people with special needs. Volunteers assist leaders with supervision.
Special Olympics - 562-429-7472 - For our “Special” athletes, we have a year round Special Olympics program. Volunteers help with coaching and general supervision of the athletes.
Lakewood Youth Sports - 562-866-9771, ext.2408 - Volunteers coaches are needed to coach youth in free baseball, softball, flag football, volleytennis, and basketball programs.
Senior Brown Bag - 562-630-6141 - Free, packaged food items including U.S.D.A. commodities are available to low-income seniors. Volunteers help with paper work and distribution twice a month.
Receptionist - 562-630-6141/562-925-7512 - Volunteers work the information desk and do light clerical duties at the Burns Community Center and the Weingart Senior Center.
Senior Center Special Events - 562-630-6141 - Volunteers help with a wide variety of special senior events that are held at the Weingart Senior Center.
Halloween Carnivals- contact your local park - Free Carnivals are offered at eight Lakewood parks. Community volunteers staff carnival game booths and haunted houses.
Project Shepherd - 562-925-7512 - This is the December Holiday Assistance Program for Lakewood residents. Volunteers are needed to sort donations, pack boxes, assist with home deliveries, and help with paperwork.
Lakewood Volunteer Day - 562-925-7512 - On one Saturday, each April, volunteers are needed to assist with yard and outside home maintenance repair at homes of low income disabled residents.
Tax Assistance - 562-925-7512 - This program provides free assistance in preparing State and Federal Income Tax returns February through April. Volunteers are trained in late January and then volunteer once a week through April 15 assisting with income tax preparation.
